Topic: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

For a more comprehensive guide about some of the most common problems you can use  GSGDani's Teeworlds guide for Windows. My sincere thanks go out to GSGDani for the serious effort he put into this.

As there are many questions that have been asked numerous times I decided to create this topic with frequently asked questions. It mostly contains previously asked questions, but will most definitely expand as time progresses. Be free to post any questions (and answers) which you deem to be missing.

As it will be impossible for this FAQ to cover all possible questions please remember to always use the search function before asking any questions. There is a good chance that a question that is not in this FAQ has still been asked on the forum.

Game:

Q: How can I start my own Teeworlds server?
A: Check the documentation and the TeeWiki. As there have been many questions about server creation you could also search the forum for information. If this doesn’t help be free to ask for help on the support forum.

Q: When will the next version of Teeworlds be released? What will change?
A: This is one of the few eternal uncertainties our galaxy has to face. As it’s a voluntary project and has no development goals or deadlines it’s impossible to provide solid release dates. In the mean time you are free to post your suggestions and report any bugs you might encounter. If you can code you can also contribute by actively coding certain patches for the next version. Contact a developer if you are interested in this.

Q: How can I contact the development team of Teeworlds?
A: The development team reads all posts on the forum so your voice will always be heard, although we might not be able to respond to everything as much as we want. You can also contact us in person through the Teeworlds IRC channel or the private forum mail.

Q: How can I port forward my router to support Teeworlds?
A: This action is slightly different for each specific router but you could use this post as a general guide. Ask in support for specific details or further support.

Q: How can I compile Teeworlds?
A: Check this general tutorial and ask for support on the forum if needed.

Q: Why does the Teeworlds team keep the K.I.S.S. mentality?
A: The “Keep It Simple, Stupid” principle is something that has existed since day one and forms a strong ambition by which the game has reached its current success. However it’s no unbreakable shield that should limit development, only a reminder of a core principle.

Q: How can I minimize Teeworlds on a Mac?
A: This is not possible in the latest version of the game, but can be overcome in several ways. One easy solution is to play the game in windowed mode, but this might not be preferable. If you are capable of compiling the game yourself you might want to use this patch to solve this issue. It adds a “minimize” command which can then be used in the Teeworlds console.

Q: What happened to the 0.6.0 Lua support?
A: As development on this took too long and lost priority versus other more crucial development plans the Lua-support is no longer planned and will most likely not be added in 0.6.0. It could still be something for a future release though.

Q: How can I add special characters to my Teeworlds name?
A: This can't be done from within the game but requires some external file editing. Go to your Teeworlds folder and open config_directory. Then open settings.cfg with any text editor and search the line player_name, there you can edit your name with special characters.

Graphical and custom content:

Q: I want to make my own custom map and / or graphical skins, how can I get started?
A: There are some good tutorials on the TeeWiki. One for maps, one for skins and one for backgrounds.

Q: I am looking for a tileset, map, mod, or skin that I once had but can't find anymore, where can I find it?
A: At first a forum search should do the trick, as most of the custom content produced for Teeworlds is released here. If this offers no solution then your best chances are to look in the Teeworlds Database, which also contains a lot of custom content for Teeworlds. If you can't find it there either and are in real need for this particular object then your best option is to ask on the forum. Maybe someone still has the thing you are looking for on their PC or at least knows where you can find it.

Q: I would like to have someone make me a skin, avatar, map or mod to my specifications, where do I go?
A: There is a regular topic if you want a teeskin or an avatar. For all other forms of custom content you'll just have to ask on this forum and see if anyone feels like helping you.

Q: Where are my maps stored on a Mac?
A: Right click on your Teeworlds.app and select "Show Package Contents" and then go to Contents > Resources > Data. Here are all the skins and sounds and here you can add your custom content. If you don’t want to do that every time you can just make a shortcut (right click and Make Alias) of the "data" folder so it is easier to get to when you want to add custom content.

Q: Can I convert my Teeworlds demos to conventional video formats?
A: This is not possible as demos are not videos but “replays” of the original game. If you want to make video recordings you could use other software like Fraps, Xfire or HyperCam.

Q: Will there be counter-measures against bots in the upcoming versions?
A: Although we regret the existence of bots there are currently no plans to implement countermeasures against them. It would take too many resources away from other, more fruitful development plans and due to the open source nature of Teeworlds all countermeasures would be cracked relatively easy.

Q: I’m experiencing strange graphical anomalies, how can I use the borderfix?
A: A very good explanation can be found in this topic.

Q: I've heard or seen a player with a funky rainbow client mod that made him switch colors all the time, really fast. I would like to have this as well, where can I find it?
A: This client modification was once present on these forums, but was removed shortly after it's release. The two main reasons are that it can be a distraction for other players, and if too many players use it on one server it will have a serious impact on the latency due to data flooding. If you happen to find this client on the internet we strongly suggest that you do not use it except under strict private conditions (LAN or your own password protected servers). Besides that, the client modification is no longer supported by it's original developer and as such will probably not  function with any upcoming versions of Teeworlds.

Website / forum:

Q: Why must every post be in English or have an English translation in it?
A: As Teeworlds is an international game, this forum is a community place where many nationalities meet. Unfortunately we don't have what it takes to manage an international forum at the moment. English is therefore the second best option because most people speak it to some degree, or know someone who might help them with it. There are also many online translators which might help out with this.

Q: How can I add a Teeworlds banner to my website or forum?
A: Use the following code:

 <a href="http://teeworlds.com"><img src="http://www.teeworlds.com/images/twlogo.png" /></a>

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Good job azon. :] [+]

But...I want to know: "Who had the idea for teeworlds?", "How did the teeworlds devs meet to make teeworlds?", "Why did the devs feel like making this game?", "Who are they planing on passing the torch to when they decide to retire from teeworlds?",  "What gave them the inspiration to make teeworlds?" "Why did they change their slogan "Cute little buggers with guns." to "Jumping the gun." in the 0.4.0 release?" (I liked the first one much better. ;.;)

Thanks for the answers, I've always had them, but no good place to ask such random questions.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

That are very interesting questions indeed, but personally I wouldn't know the answers to those. Maybe one of the original developers could find time to answer them. Until then they will stay unanswered mysteries.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Man, I guess them devs are busy bees. wink

Two more questions: "Why have the devs been more bussy?" I think they started getting busier about the 0.5.0 update... And, "Why do people close topics rather than deleting them?" I see a lot of useless topics that get closed than deleated, just wanted to know why.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The moderators close topics so they stay available for other people to find with the search function. If we would delete simple questions like "Where to find the map editor?" the next person that has this question can't find it and will ask it again. By closing it (and by praying that people one day learn how to use search) we can at least reduce the number of repeated questions people ask.

Of course if posts or topics make no sense whatsoever or are unrelated to Teeworlds they will get deleted.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

In the game what does it mean when you get a error saying: "Map "ctf_map" differs from sever." or "Dropped due to reversed slot."?

In the forums what would someone have to violate to get a warning and/or a ban? How do people come a Moderators?

In development how can people become part of the teeworld's team? (Mapper/Artist/Sound Effects Maker/Coder/ect...)

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1) If you download a map, and while you download it, the server changes the map, your downloaded map differs from
the map which is currently running on the server. You'll get a error message.
2) Dropped due to reversed slot means there are special slots only for people who got the reversed slots password
    (Not for normal server joiners)

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do the makers of teeworlds let people with users that have been inactive for a year, still have an account with the forums?

It seems... unorganized...

There is a translator that translates very well. Obviously, it is not perfect, but at least it reflects.

Nope, it's pretty unreadable. If you don't know english, find a localized forum.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

It's been almost 7 months and still no new release of teeworlds... What's the holdup? |:,

I would also like to add that teetow hasn't even posted in this year yet; last post of teetow was: 2009-Oct-26. But both haven't posted in about 4 months; last post of matricks was: 2010-Jan-2. I know this don't mean they aren't working on it, but I am wondering if they need more help or just don't want to be involved in teeworlds anymore?. sad

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Be patient. The devs have lives. They'll release new Teeworlds when they're ready. I'd rather them take a year to make a good new version then take a month to make a horrible new version.

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I think there was a topic that gave a tutorial on how to edit maps that aren't yours that you've played on teeworlds (without having to download them on a website): link please?

all the maps you've downloaded are in your user directory, if you cannot find it search for *.map and you will find a directory with all automatically downloaded maps

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

That page opens normally for me. What browser do you use? Maybe you could try to view it with another browser?

17

Re: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Looks like the site opens now (again), but earlier this day it seemed like it wouldn't open. For me, too smile
So I guess it's fine now for everyone, as I had the same problem.

They vanished with the whole Wiki. If you look here http://www.teeworlds.com/forum/viewtopi … 376#p80376 we have to wait 0.6 and TeeKilla will post a new one. If you want an old copy without images go here http://replay.waybackmachine.org/200904 … r_tutorial
