Comon that is not a good solution, you should have said that before. Now people are finished with their maps, so I guess we should allow custom graphics too.

I know this does sound harsh, but in a competition you should be using your own work. If you submit someone else's graphics, then you will not be using your own work. This is why that rule was there. I posted these rules up before to make sure everything was fair, and went through a drawing process. There, everyone also seemed to agree. So I think I am not likely to get rid of this rule unless the other judges want to as well.

@Stephanator: Custom tiles are allowed, but you have to make them yourself.
EDIT: You may now use Spear Tiles and N-race.

That's hard stuff for a race map then. My spear tileset is kinda standard for them.
I would allow the contestants to use custom tilesets, but they have to be sure, that they look great. Otherwise it's a big fat minus, as I want a teeish map and not a crappy map.

Well, I think just making an exception for the spear graphics is good enough. The Nrace tileset is like creating your own tileset, anyone can make nrace from scratch in 10 minutes so hey, let's just pretend he made it himself, then race mappers have spear and nrace, and the ctf and dm mappers still have to actually work to get things pretty.

I'm quessing the community award is gonna be quirky, since a map post which is on the last place on a page will get fewer views than others x)

I'm doing something similar. I'm working on a website, which may be ready for next year's competition. Wordpress will be good, because it allows commenting, editing, and pictures. That we, each post could be a map, and its own thread. I don't know how the rating will go, though.

Its a map contest, not a graphics contest. Isn't it the gameplay of the map that matters? I can use all bones to make a great map from grass main. I agree with others to remove that rule...BTW the titel of this topic is MAP design competition.

1. I already made two exceptions to this rule.
2. The contest relies on three criteria: accessibility, playability, AND graphics. Though playability is most important, this contest should be about all three so that we can bring out the overall best mapper.

First of all, you can make any png. The only tiles off limits are most of other people's tiles except for spikes and nrace.

As for the idea, good, but I think people should be allowed to make their own graphics. Maybe making a special tileset that people would have to use but also allowing them to incorporate other graphiccs would be a more fun.

People who made racemaps but took them down they had spikes or nrace: please put them up again. These tilesets are now allowed for the race category. Right now, there is one racemap submitted, meaning that one person will win first, second, and third place! yikes

@Landil: I agree that useless posts should be downloaded. But people are also downvoting the other judges and my posts, as well as helpful feedback. Next competition will have a wordpress blog, to clear this issue up.

Well, but I would say: Improve your map until you think it's perfect and THEN upload it.
This is much more clear wich map is your final one and so on.. And why would you upload a map from wich you think it won't win with a high chance? So change your map untill it's perfect and THEN upload it.
You have got a lot of time, you know?

Oh, and Jon. I don't know if it has been asked before (I think yes), but at the end of the deadline, open a new topic where we have to show our maps.. This would be fair with the +1 voting, too.
