It's finally here! The Teeworlds Map Design Competition. NOTE: This thread is only for submission of entries and discussion on those entries.

RULES

- All maps must be under 1.5 Mb.
- No profanity or inappropriate images in maps.
- All words must have been translated to English or German.
- Maps must be submitted by the deadline; no late maps will be accepted for judging.

- Categories
— Race will include races, runs, flyraces, hpraces, and dummydrags. Races will not be judged unless one of the judges can beat them.
— DM will included DMs and TDMs. These will be judged for graphics as well as playability, so try to make you DM maps shine.
— CTF includes all traditional CTF games. If a new player cannot be expected to get from one team's flag to another due to in-map hazards, than the map would be considered a flyrace, not a CTF. Like DM, judges for CTF will have graphics in mind.

- Deadlines and submission
— You can start a map whenever you want, but it must be finished by the deadline.
— The deadline is 12:00 PM EST, September 1st
— Maps cannot be posted for critique; contestants will be disqualified if this is found out about. In addition, no special images from the map may be released before the contest ends.
— All maps submitted will be posted up for downloads on this post.
— Please post your map on this thread to enter.
— You may only submit one map to each category.
— Judges may not submit maps to the categories they are judging.
— You may not use other people's images, save the default tiles. There is an exception as well with Landil's spikes and n-race, but these may be only used for race maps.
— You may not submit maps that have been released before. This gives an unfair advantage (you have already received feedback). Special exceptions may be made if the map was released less than a week before the competition start

- Judges
— Race: Sushi Tee, Lordskelethom
— DM: Landil, Dinosmoothie
— CTF: Me, Stephanator

- Scoring
— Maps will be judged by three criteria: difficulty, playability, and graphics.
— Judges will score each of these elements on a scale of one to ten.
— The map with the highest average in each category will win.
— If there is a tie, a tie-breaker judge will be selected from the community to decide the winner arbitrarily.

- What will score points
— Maps that can be played by more people are important, so no race maps that cannot be beat by people who have a higher ping than 50.
— Asking a friend for constructive criticism will help you get a feel for what people think.
— DM and CTF Maps made only for certain mods, such as instagib, will likely not win.
— Good gameplay is the key criterium; you will need to create a fun map to get points.
— Keep in mind that graphics will earn brownie points.
— Putting TDM spawnpoints in DM maps will always add points.

- There will be one of each award per category.
- If multiple people collaborate on a map and win a prize, each collaborator will get the prize. However, no more than three people may work on a map together.

Well, most players are German. I can only speak English, however, which is why I also wrote English.

- Can I edit a map once I posted it?
You can revise the maps you submitted before the deadline.

- Where to upload the map?
You can use hosting sites like www.willhostforfood.com or http://depositfiles.com to upload your map on the forum. Make sure to list the gametype and the version, and provide screenshots.

As you know, I am one of the CTF judges and I got some experience with mapping (I won the first mapping competition), so I will give you some tips about what is most important for a quality map in my eyes:

QUALITY:
Try not to use custom tilesets, as some of they are really bad quality, but if you do, make sure they are well drawn and teestyle. I see there is alreay a map with beach tileset, this one is ok. Take care to tile the map well and don't forget corners and such details. I often see noobmaps in which all layers are detail, so if you play with low detail you wont see anything on the map. Such things are very important for me because I can see if you are a quality mapper and have understood how to use the editor properly. If two maps seem to be equally good, the details will decide.

GAMEPLAY:
The moves should be smooth, both for noobs and pros. Pros should be able to move very fast without "stumbling" and get some good speed. Noobs should be able to reach every point of the map, just with doublejump without using hook. Don't place too many obstacles and PLEASE DO NOT USE NARROW TUNNELS. That just slows the gameplay down.


Well these are the most important points for me, if I forgot something I will add it. Keep this points in mind to get my vote tongue

Btw isn't it a bit early to release your maps now? I also think that September is a bit too much time oO

Good points, Stephanator. I set September because that will allow for the highest number of entries to be submitted, and therefore, a lower chance of winning.

@0³7.Looks nice. But on the right side of the map the grenade launcher is behind the rock. Also on the left side there is a shotgun behind a rock and some armor behind a rock so players can't see it. These are only small issues but i haven't played the map yet so im not gonna give my full opinion as i may be wrong big_smile
But it looks very nice, well done.

@Jon whats our marking scheme?

The judges won't judge until September 1st. I know this is a long time to wait, but, again, it will give everyone a time to submit their maps. The Marking scheme would be:

Playabilty: 6/10
(Had a few tunnels)

Accessibility: 8/10
(Was possible for anyone to learn)

Graphics: 7/10
(Had some parallax issues)

Overall: 7/10

NOTE: This is not someone's actual map, just an example of how I (and maybe a few other judges) would judge a map.
@Sushi Tee: cool! There should be one server to run the first and second place maps in a category.

yea should be no problem for dm and ctf... for race i dunno yet. I think i would just put the maps in the loop of current servers ^^

Thanks at dinosmoothie for compiling the dilate.exe/borderfix.exe and the clan [BS] for testing the beta-map.

This map was my biggest projekt I've ever done!
The water and all other things looks in the ingame screenshots a bit weird but you can see on the ''whole map screenshot'' how it looks really.
Water, waterwheel and sun shine is animated.

Hm? If you are not allowed to use other people's graphics then the nrace tileset and the desert tileset are not allowed either?

Desert is default, for racemaps there is probably possibilities, but yeah, the rule seems weird.

Also, maybe this is a hint that people should make good racemaps which doesn't have deathtiles all over the place..? ;D

Run maps, hpraces, races, dummydrags, and flyraces are included in the race category. If Nox is okay with it, I will make a special exception for the N-race (they are, after all, the quintessential racing tiles), but Landil's spikes are not allowed.

@Chi11y: good point, I agree. My favorite race was race8, from the original race mod.
@Ubuntu: Is it okay to submit your map as a collaboration between you, Chi1, and Landil? This is the only way it seems fit to give proper attribution.

Miraculi, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't know. Sorry Ubuntu, a map that is already released more than a week before the competition is not allowed. sad

I want to get all of the rules straight here, just to be sure I am not unclear.

You CAN release one map in each category.
You CAN use default tiles.
You CAN revise the maps you submitted before the deadline.
You CAN post every kind of run map or race map in the race category.

You CANNOT use other people's tiles. (Except for maybe N-race)
You CANNOT submit multiple maps in one category.
You CANNOT post revised maps of something you released more than a week before the competition.
You CANNOT post any map made for a version below 0.5.x.

I hope this answered every question.

EDIT: N-race and spear tiles are now A-OK!
